In August 2026, I stayed at ASAI Kyoto Shijo and would like to share my experience. Opening its doors in 2023, this hotel is operated by Thailand’s Dusit Group. The name “ASAI” originates from a Thai word meaning “to live with the locals.”
Located in the heart of Kyoto, the nearest stations are Shijo Station on the subway (Karasuma Station on the Hankyu Line) or Gojo Station on the subway. It is a convenient base for sightseeing around the city. Situated just one block off the main Karasuma Street, the hotel offers a peaceful and quiet environment.
As soon as you enter the hotel, you are greeted by the front desk area, where self-check-in kiosks are lined up. This time, a staff member took care of the check-in process for me.
The hotel offers six room types, all featuring a shower booth without a bathtub. Higher-category rooms are slightly larger, though the difference is minimal. The Cozy Twin rooms are located on the basement level, which is somewhat unique, but an open-air atrium allows natural light to enter. As for the sleeping area, only the Comfy King has wooden flooring, while the other room types feature tatami mats. This time, I stayed in a Comfy Hollywood Twin room.

Just past the front desk, you will find the Thai restaurant “Soi Gaeng.”
Upon entering the room, there is a sink area right in front of you. The large mirror makes the room feel much spacious.
The beds are placed directly on tatami mats. There is storage space under the bed, which allows you to store large luggage like suitcases and keeps the room from feeling cramped.
There was also a desk, although it was small. Both the restroom and the shower booth were clean and brand new.
Breakfast is served set-menu style at “Soi Gaeng.” Options included several Thai dishes, a Japanese set breakfast, Western fare, and a kids’ menu. Since it’s a hotel chain originating from Thailand, I decided to go with a Thai dish.
Drinks were self-service at the counter, featuring coffee, tea, milk, and orange juice.
As a restaurant certified with “Thai Select Two Stars” by the Ministry of Commerce of Thailand, it served authentic and delicious food. I found the spiciness level very palatable. Thanks to its reasonable prices, it is also highly recommended for morning, lunch, or dinner, even if you are not staying at the hotel.
