In September 2026, I stayed at Atami Izusan KARAKU and would like to share my experience. Opened in 2023, this luxury hot spring resort by ORIX Hotels & Resorts has been awarded “1 Michelin Key” by the Michelin Guide.
We took the hotel’s reservation-only shuttle bus from Atami Station, which took about 10 minutes to reach the hotel.
Upon arriving at the hotel, we were guided by elevator to the lobby on the top floor.
Although it was a cloudy day, the lobby welcomed us with a breathtaking view overlooking Sagami Bay.
We were served local Shizuoka Japanese black tea as a welcome drink.
There are 6 room types to choose from.
The Suites and “Karaku Rooms” offer exclusive perks not available in other rooms, such as early check-in, late check-out, a free minibar, and dedicated hospitality from a personal “Karaku Okami” (concierge/host) starting October 2026.
Aside from the Suites, all rooms are the same size, but higher floors offer better views. Some Ocean View rooms and the Standard rooms feature a Japanese-style layout with tatami living space, while the rest are Western-style. (Ocean View rooms on the 4th floor are Japanese-style, and those on the 5th floor are Western-style.)
Please note that Superior and Standard rooms may not offer ocean views from their terraces. However, since you can fully enjoy the scenery from the lounges and communal hot springs, opting for these room types is still a great choice.

This time, I chose a Superior Room and was lucky enough to get one with a fantastic view. On the 3rd floor, even within the same room category, the view seems to depend on the location of the room and the surrounding trees.
Beyond the washbasin is a shower booth, which leads directly out to the private open-air bath.
In your private open-air bath, you can soak in the hot spring while taking in the ocean views. You can also lower the blinds to keep the bath completely private from both the outside and the living area.
Inside the fridge, there was complimentary water and apple juice.
This sacoche bag was really handy for walking around the hotel. They were also available for purchase at the gift shop.
Guest Lounge 間（AWAI）
The hotel features two lounges that guests can use for free. Located on the top floor is the “AWAI” lounge.
Located right next to the lobby, this space allows you to freely enjoy drinks and light snacks while admiring the beautiful views. You can also step outside onto the terrace, which even features a footbath.
Light snacks and sweets are served here. Different items were laid out the next day, so you can definitely enjoy visiting more than once!
The drink corner offers a variety of beverages, including alcohol, soft drinks, coffee, and tea.

Guest Lounge 刻（TOKI）
The other lounge is “Toki,” located on the 6th floor.
This lounge overlooks the mountain side and also offers outdoor terrace seating.
This lounge mainly offers coffee, tea, and a selection of light sweet treats.
You can choose your favorite coffee beans or tea leaves, and they serve it made-to-order in an individual French press for each guest!
You can also choose your favorite teacup from a wide variety on display.
Waiting leisurely for your coffee to press is a luxury in itself.
The quality of the sweets here is exceptional as well.
Public Bath
On the 7th floor, there is a hot spring communal bath that offers a panoramic ocean view.
The panoramic ocean view was absolutely amazing, and there was a sauna as well.
The shoe lockers come with locks, giving you extra peace of mind.
They offer free post-bath drinks here, including beer, milk, coffee milk, and detox water.
The post-bath relaxation area also features a beautiful view, along with an outdoor terrace. Enjoying a cold beer on the terrace after a hot soak might just be the perfect way to unwind.
Restaurant “Mutsuki”
We had both dinner and breakfast at the hotel’s on-site restaurant, “Mutsuki.”
Here is a look at part of the dinner course menu. Since Atami is famous for its seafood, the menu heavily features fish dishes—though meat is served as well.
For breakfast, guests could choose from several types of grilled fish, and I went with the grilled mackerel.
In closing…
Upon checking out, we were presented with a lovely souvenir gift.

Soaking in the hot spring while taking in the endless ocean stretching before my eyes was pure luxury. Unlike many hotels that offer one lounge with alternating services throughout the day, this resort features two distinct lounges operating simultaneously with different concepts. Because of this, you never have to worry about the time, and overcrowding is naturally dispersed—making for a truly relaxing experience that I can’t rate highly enough.
